The honest version of the sit-stand research: standing all day is not better than sitting all day. Alternating is better than either. Which means even with a standing desk, you'll spend 60 to 70% of the day seated. That ordering decides where the first rupee goes.
Spend on the chair first if…
- Your current chair has no lumbar adjustment, no recline lock, or a sagging seat: those affect every seated hour, and you have 6+ of them daily regardless of desk
- You already have back pain (work through the back-pain checklist first, it's free)
- Your budget is under ₹20K total: a well-fitted chair plus a fixed desk beats a cheap chair plus a motorised desk in every study of seated comfort
Spend on the desk first if…
- Your chair is already decent and your desk height is wrong for your body: no chair adjustment can fix a desk that's 6 cm too tall
- You genuinely alternate: the people who benefit from sit-stand desks are the ones who stand 2 to 4 times daily in 20 to 30 minute blocks, usually for calls
- Multiple people share the workstation: height adjustability serves different bodies, not just different postures
The combination that works
A mid-range ergonomic chair (₹10 to 18K) plus a height-adjustable desk covers both failure modes: properly supported sitting, and the option to stand without ergonomic penalty. If that's over budget this year, buy the chair now and the desk next year, not the reverse.
